When you begin playing poker people have no idea how you play and they probably won’t pay much attention to you. This in the beginning is very useful as it means that you can win something in the beginning. Here are a few pointers:

Keeping it simple

When you’re new at it, it’s essential to keep things simple so that you have control over your game. What you should do is to avoid taking unnecessary risks and bluffing and play a tight game. You can bet aggressively if you have the best hand or a very good one. However it is best not to bluff because they other experienced players can guess whether you have the best hand and this works to your disadvantage. You should use pot odds to make decisions but don’t try to use any psychological strategies as they will only backfire.

Use your own head

Also another very common mistake that occurs while playing poker is that people want to follow guidelines strictly and try to use a strategy in every situation. The thing with poker is that strategies aren’t tailor made for every situation. At best you can have hints or advice on how to play the game but when it comes down to a moment it is your judgmental skills that work.

Poker is not a game that is pre-planned with well thought out strategies. What happens is different in every game and decisions should be made on the spot. Using strategies that you have thought of before will only cause you to fail.

Playing poker requires you to have some confidence in yourself. There is no necessity to follow textbook guidelines. Use whatever works for you at the moment. Poker is all about situations and mastering them.
