Luck or skill?

There is always the debate whether poker is a game of skill or a game of luck. The thing with poker is you never really know. It could be luck and it could also be the person’s skills at work here. There are people who win solely because they are very lucky while there are those who win even though they have rotten luck because of their skill and timing.
A poker game always starts off evenly matched and it is only later that a winner becomes clear. Poker is about luck, but then it’s also about a lot more.
If a person plays smart and within his limits, he isn’t likely to be defeated or have a lot of money made off him. A person who plays safe and keeps a keen watch on things always knows what is happening. He knows when to make a move and when to lie low.
A person who is a good poker player knows his own limitations and also does not make the mistake of underestimating his opponents. He knows that people can get lucky and so he doesn’t challenge another man’s luck. He knows when to play his best hand, when to drop his cards and when to let a hand go.
A reckless player on the other hand always leaves everything to luck. He bluffs endlessly and tends to underestimate his opponents. In some situations luck may help, but in most it will not. Luck is something we have no control over so there is no point leaving things to luck.
It is within a person’s control to play a cautious and sensible game and he should do so. Playing a foolhardy game may pay off a few times but taking risks will catch up with you sometime.
