Texas Hold ‘em Raising Tips

There are many reasons for the importance of raising in Texas Hold 'em, one being that it is more advantageous to be the kind of player that does more raising and folding rather than simply just calling.

It is critical to make raising an integral part of your Texas Hold 'em strategy. Do not lapse into predictability and learn to take the game to your opponents where you can by using strategic raising to your advantage whenever possible.

Perhaps the best known reason for raising is that it allows more money to go into the pot. When you believe you have the strongest hand, your aim is to ensure that the other player must put more money into the pot in order to play.  When there are more than two players in a game, raising is an excellent strategy, because if you manage to catch the flush even half the time, you will make a decent profit. Remember, though, that if you are holding a particularly strong hand, it is better to play slow and raise on a more expensive street, as you do not want to cut any of the other players out of the pot.

Raising can also be extremely useful, as it enables you to glean information on the other players in the game and where you stand at a particular stage of the game. For instance, if you check raise a player and they respond by three-betting you, the likelihood is that they have the better hand than you do. In this event, you have the choice of folding or calling another bet in order to view the turn card. If you do not improve your hand by doing so, you can fold and, in the process, save yourself two big bets. The trick may not work perfectly all the time, but will, generally speaking, give you a decent insight into the strength of a player's hand.

Another good reason to raise is that it can serve to limit the competition. Make your opponents pay as many bets as possible for calling-especially in a low-limit game. By raising an opponent that bet you, you can cut down the competition by forcing them to call two bets instead. This will also plant the seeds of doubt in your opponents' minds and work the situation to your advantage, even if you may not necessarily be able to come out ahead otherwise.

You can also use the raise in order to bluff your opponents, but it may be a strategy that you will seldom use, or at least less so than others. It is much more powerful to raise in order to bluff rather than to bet-and a check-raise is all the more powerful still. It is very important to know and understand when a bluff will work, as you need to be aware of both your opponent's hand as well as the hand he thinks you have. It is helpful if the opponent has plenty of money in the pot, as this makes it unlikely that they will fold once the stakes of their losing are high.
